Abstract
Epoxy resin based zinc rich coating was thoroughly investigated with aluminum triphosphate as rust converter. About 10.39 MPa of adhesion strength was achieved on rusted steel surface without any complex surface pre-treatment even with 86 wt% of zinc content in dry film, which has resolved previous contradiction between adhesion strength and high zinc content. Only slight amounts of white rust was observed on coating surface after being exposed to neutral salt spray test for 500 h. Protective mechanism suggested that aluminum triphosphate could improve the barrier resistance of coating by converting surface rust into passive film, while high zinc content ensured its excellent cathodic protection.
