Abstract

This paper proposes a Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) communication-based Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) system that considers the road surface condition at intersections. Because existing AEB systems reflect only specific road conditions, braking is ineffective in road conditions other than the ones specified. To rectify this problem, a new control logic, in which the braking time is considered in various road conditions, is introduced. Application of the proposed AEB system with the Time to Collision (TTC) method showed reduced collision risk at an intersection based on information from the Host Vehicle and a neighboring vehicle. The determination as to whether to collide or avoid was made using the relative angle between the vehicles. Further, the results of analysis of the proposed AEB control logic indicate that it offers better braking and anti-collision performance than conventional logic systems.
