Abstract

Cr/CrSiN multi-layer coatings with various multi-layer structures were fabricated on titanium alloy (TC4) by ion-plating technology. Microstructures, adhesion, wear and friction, and erosion wear performance were investigated. The results showed the Cr/CrSiN-10 multi-layer coating exhibited higher adhesive strength (HF1), and low friction coefficient (0.44) and wear rate (4.1 × 10−10mm3N−1·m−1). This improved wear resistance of the Cr/CrSiN multi-layer coating (Cr/CrSiN-10) was due to the reduced probability of coating peels. The Cr/CrSiN-10 multi-layer coating also exhibited lower erosion wear rate (0.05 μm s−1) compared with Cr/CrSiN-1 coating (0.15 μm s−1). It is proposed that the improved erosion wear resistance of Cr/CrSiN multi-layer coating arises from the fact that the erosion cracks were intercepted and captured by the ductile Cr layers and the multi-layer structures.
