Abstract

Experiments reveal that magnetoelectric crystals usually experience incommensurate magnetic ordering. In this work we present symmetry arguments for the intimate coupling between ferroelectric magnetically ordered phases and modulated magnetic order. The obtained results are applied to crystals belonging to the D2h (mmm) crystallographic class and illustrated by two examples of rare-earth manganites RMn2O5 and MnWO4.
