Abstract

This paper aims to study the meaning and usage of impression. First of all, this study established the model of the logical meaning of impression and then analyze the usage in terms of Halliday’s relational, material and mental processes. Through the usage analysis of impression constructions, this study revealed the fact that the meaning of impression has two aspects: In relational and mental processes, impression has a dynamic meaning which represents the process of an act and while in material processes, impression has a static meaning which represents the result of an act. Finally, the study suggested some principles: (1) There must be phenomenon as an agent of impress and observer as an object of impress. In this case, the meaning of impression is attributed to the observer. (2) In relational processes using the verbs(be, have, get, etc.), phenomenon must be represented in the form of ‘of phenomenon’ In this case, impression has a dynamic meaning. (3) In material processes using the verbs(give, make, etc.), Observer (meaning the general public) can be omitted. In this case, impression has a static meaning.
