Abstract

This chapter is a discussion of impossible worlds and their metaphysics. Impossible worlds are worlds according to which impossible states of affairs obtain. This chapter considers the nature of worlds (both possible and impossible) other than our own. Are they genuine concrete entities, or mere ersatz representations? An argument is given for the latter view, in the case of both possible and impossible worlds. This is compatible with actualism, according to which everything that exists actually exists. A positive metaphysical theory of possible and impossible worlds is given in chapter 5.
