Abstract Analysis of 81 innovations by scientists of the USDA Forest Service and their cooperators delineated 22 factors or elements that tended to be present in successful research. Adaptation of existing techniques or technology, pilot testing, cooperation with private industry, and acquisition of underlying theory were the four factors appearing most often.
