Abstract

Many youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have co-occurring problems in addition to the core features of impaired social communication and restricted, repetitive behavior. However, because behavioral symptoms often have limited specificity, it can often be difficult to determine when they are a function of ASD and when they represent a problem requiring a specialized approach. In this collection of presentations, we present strategies to characterize and treat 4 such problems: psychosis, anxiety, ADHD, and emotional dysregulation. Each of these problems, though relatively common in the ASD population, is challenging to separate from the disorder's core features.
