Abstract

The effectiveness of restorative and regenerative therapy is significantly influenced by gingival biotype and phenotype. The different tissue responses to trauma may be the reason of the variance in outcomes related to treatment. Thus, it is imperative to identify periodontal biotype and periodontal phenotype in clinical practise. Numerous techniques both invasive and non-invasive in nature can be utilised to amount thickness of the gingiva. Thin and thick tissues frequently react to inflammation and damage differently. Technique used in periodontal surgery can enhance quality of the tissue and results related to treatment. Current review showcases the fundamental characteristics of biotype and phenotype of gingiva, procedures for measuring gingival thickness, treatment response, ways for enhancing tissue quality, and its clinical importance. This review further, explores the connotation amongst gingival tissue biotypes and phenotypes and their role in treatment planning.
