Abstract

Throughout the world there are some thousands of high concrete dams and more than 100000 small dams in use. A realistic analysis of the behaviour of these existing dams shows that they have operated satisfactorily for a long time, although most of them do contain cracks. In view of this less than satisfactory situation, for future dams it is necessary to consider as early as the design stage the question of potential crack formation. Some of the latest methods of analysis and structural measures are outlined. This paper deals with the importance and significance of cracks.
