Abstract

The burgeoning human population and their present and future habitation issues have been advanced the sensible necessities for their well-organized planning, management, and implementation under the ambit of sustainable development scope. However, degradation in environmental quality like unplanned urban sprawl and increasing Urban Heat Islands (UHI) have threaten the future of sustainable development in urban zones. The focus of this study is how climate science including environmental planning and urban infrastructure design can lead to better urban sustainable development. Therefore, fields like urban climatology, eco-friendly designs like urban green infrastructures which are sustainable are gaining significant attention and becoming very efficient options to urban infrastructure development planners and city dwellers in both developed and developing countries. Therefore, implementation of green infrastructures (GIs) could contribute in adaptation and mitigation of climate change and using it for urban planning can play a vital role in enhancing and achieving sustainability in urban areas. Moreover, GIs method will be helpful in fulfilling environmental, social, and economic needs of urban areas leading to sustainability. Thus, environmental or climatological parameters in the development of infrastructures during framework of city plans can provide smart and efficient solutions to urban settlement issues. This would make human population conscious towards environmental requirements and avoid degradation to have better future, thus firmly lead towards achievement of sustainable development goals. This book chapter highlights the benefits, importance, and scope of environmental inputs/parameters and climatological relationship towards the city planning and infrastructure development. The work has highlighted the various concepts of eco-friendly infrastructure planning explained with the comprehensive case studies from different parts of the world to evaluate the social, economic, and environmental benefits of urban climatological inputs in city planning. Moreover, chapter also discusses some of the constraints and key challenges in this field including its future prospects to understand the potential of this topic in detail. Thus, the chapter provides a clear-cut vision of sustainable development at city planning and population settlements issues as well as related policies makings.
