Abstract

From consumer electronics to transportation, lithium-ion batteries are popular due to their low weight, high energy density, and long lifespan. These batteries must be safe, reliable, and long-lasting, particularly in industries such as transportation that require durability and safety. The design, installation, and management of battery cells (BMS) have a significant impact on battery safety and reliability by protecting the pack against damaging events such as over-charges and under-charges. They can also identify potentially dangerous conditions within the battery pack, which are vital in ensuring the reliability and longevity of systems utilizing lithium-ion batteries. This Lecture presents information on the role of battery pack design and battery management systems in Electric vehicles and discusses the methodologies, features, and functions of the battery pack with BMS in protecting and preserving the lifespan of lithium-ion batteries.
