Abstract

Adolescence is arguably the transition period taken by a person from children to adulthood. At this time a person experiences a period of growth and physical and psychological development. Adolescent growth is greatly influenced by the family environment, especially their parents. Communication that is established in the family plays a major role in the development of adolescents. In the modern era like now, smartphone is very popular among the people, especially teenagers because of the many applications on smartphones that make it easy to communicate. Therefore researchers are interested in examining what are the factors that influence adolescents using smartphones and how the implications of smartphone use in adolescents on family communication with parents. This type of research uses a qualitative approach with descriptive analysis. Subjects in this research are adolescents aged 13-15 years who are classified as early adolescents. Researchers chose 10 teenagers in Permata Jingga Global junior hight school, Malang city in East Java. The technique of determining the research subject is purposive sampling. Data collection techniques in the form of observation, interviews, and documentation. The conclusions of this study indicate that excessive smartphone usage and without supervision in adolescents can be raises the limits of family communication, especially with their parents.
