Abstract
The Eels (England and Wales) Regulations 2009 and similar upcoming legislation covering other fish species have led to a need for eel- and fishfriendly pumps for numerous pumping applications. Survival rates are a high priority and data obtained over many years, mainly from the USA is referenced. This paper presents details of a family of pumps developed over a period of 50 years that have been proven to be eel- and fish-friendly by independent third party testing. The features of current land drainage pumping stations are also examined along with proposed solutions. Fish screening alone may not provide an economic or environmentally acceptable solution and in cases where fish have to be lifted to a higher level to assist with natural migration, a combination of some form of eel/fish diversion device coupled with a small low-power proven fish-friendly pump is proposed as a possible solution
