Abstract

Abstract This article uses the regional response against the Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic as a proxy for measuring the depth of integration in the East African Community (EAC). The article probes actions and decisions of the EAC member states in combating the COVID-19 pandemic as a litmus test of strength of supranational institutions. To achieve this, a review of the integration process has been undertaken to appraise of the level of depth of integration, achievements and challenges. It sets out by surveying the theoretical debate on regional integration and pertinent issues of necessity and resistance to regional integration. Ultimately, it wishes to establish whether the COVID-19 pandemic was an opportunity for deepening regional integration or it has served to expose the institutional and policy limitations eroding the pillars of integration.
