Abstract

A relevant issue in relation to child labour concerns household chores and non-economic activities like domestic work. Thus Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour (IPEC) has identified a contemporary additional challenge in the elimination of child labour as being the focus on this type of child work. The relevant International Labour Organization (ILO) Conventions, the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and a number of domestic laws call for the elimination of child labour. The rhetoric, the political outrage, the enactment of domestic laws and implementation strategies are all aimed at eliminating the worst forms of child labour and countering the nefarious actions of adults who enslave children and use them in commercial sex work and illicit activities. A recent International Organization for Migration (IOM) study has examined legislation in certain Southern African countries to determine the legal and practical obstacles in prosecuting child labour.
