Abstract

Network emulation has important role in engineering education and computer network courses. Creation of emulated network environments is possible using the virtualization technology. Nowadays, there are a number of various examples of using virtualization technology for creating virtual network environments used for engineering education at universities. This paper introduces the novel approach in designing an open virtual networking environment based on virtualization technology. This environment is primarily designed for efficient usage and management of remotely accessible virtual network laboratory. The laboratory is primarily used in the computer network course for teaching TCP/IP networking. Open environment provides virtual laboratory remote access for students, remote laboratory management as well as creation and configuration of networking scenarios. Implementation of BGP-4 protocol scenario is also presented in this paper as a case study.
