Abstract

Implementation of behavioral treatment in an institutional setting with unmotivated staff who lack behavioral sophistication, a low staff to client ratio, and a poor physical and management environment is usually a difficult process. It is even more challenging when the clients are severely and profoundly retarded adults who show aggressive problem behaviors. This article describes a treatment system developed under such constraints, including the system's organization, staff training and motivation procedures, treatment cueing techniques, problem solving structure, and strategies for maintaining administrative support. Outcome data demonstrate the system's effectiveness.
