Abstract

At present there is considerable momentum to improve services for children with emotional and behavioral disturbance and their families. Significant opportunity for change now exists; an effective paradigm has been articulated; new technology has been developed and advocacy efforts are beginning to focus public attention on the need to increase support and develop new approaches for the field of child mental health. This article describes the current status in the field of child mental health. The major obstacles impending progress are summarized, and principles and guidelines are offered for transforming the new paradigm into a responsive system of services for children with emotional and behavioral disturbance and their families. Examples are given to illustrate how the current vision of child mental health services has been effectively put into practice.
