Abstract

As part of the development of a new structure management methodology for the Highways Agency, the inspection procedures have been revised. The main change is the replacement of Principal Inspections with Benchmark Inspections at less frequent intervals and with Particular and Targetted Inspections to investigate specific areas in more detail. The aims of the new procedures are to provide the bridge engineer with the information he needs to manage his structures, concentrate effort where it is needed most, and improve the quality and consistency of inspection and reporting. A comprehensive Bridge Inspection Manual has been prepared to describe the new inspection procedures and provide advice on reporting, defects and methods of testing. However, before launching the manual, the Highways Agency has commissioned field trials of the new inspection procedures, to ensure the appropriateness and practicality of the procedures. This paper outlines the fiele trials and describes the initial findings. For the covering abstract see ITRD E108224.
