Abstract

Efficient, safe, specialized triage of perinatal patients in an emergency environment requires a specialized interdisciplinary team as well as a standardized triage system. Often, the triage of a perinatal patient occurs in the labor and delivery unit. This triage is completed by a registered nurse. This obstetric environment is high risk for the care team, with two lives to care for. A recent literature review shows a gap in both research and practice regarding the triage and emergency care of perinatal patients. The method of triage by a registered nurse on the labor and delivery unit can lead to unnecessary admissions. Additionally, the literature reveals that one of the highest rates of harmful events to patients is in the perinatal population.
