Abstract
Abstract Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety (TeamSTEPPS) is an evidence-based team building curriculum developed by the Department of Defense and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). We utilized the TeamSTEPPS Primary Care curriculum to teach teamwork skills to all members of our primary care team, including frontline clerks, nursing staff, advanced practice providers, residents and faculty. All team members learned the same specific skills in leadership, communication, situation monitoring and mutual support which are essential for effective clinic team functioning. Additionally, team members from each of the different disciplines were given leadership roles. Since the implementation in 2013, we observed increases in staff job satisfaction, Press Ganey patient satisfaction scores, patient safety, resident perceptions of teamwork and teamwork culture.
