Abstract

The aim of the paper is to evaluate the situation with implementation of renewable energy sources (RES) in the Russian energy system, to highlight the positive and negative influence of this process on consumers and suppliers of traditional electric power, to assess the prospects for the development of solar and wind energy in Russia. Research methods include analysis of experts' opinions on the introduction of solar and wind energy, and evaluation of the impact of RES on the development of energy system in Russia. The analysis of the practice of solar and wind energy development in other countries allows to conclude that this process goes through the certain stages. It stars with pilot projects, and then solar and wind energy generation partially replace traditional technologies. In some cases it leads to decreasing the reliability of energy systems. Findings: Based on the results of the study, it is concluded that all types of intermittent generation are appropriate to use in the energy system of Russia only as supplemental, until advanced development of energy storage technologies happens. At the same time, all types of managed renewable energy, both conventional and non-conventional, could positively contribute to the energy system taking into account economic and environmental feasibility. In addition, Russia has many reasons to diversify energy industry, including related to climate strategy and current economic course of the country. Wind energy already has the development potential within some regions of Russia, and also the growing export potential. Originality/value: The conceptual framework for the development of the RES industry in Russia was proposed. Stated that further development of this industry is complicated by the lack of specialists. The paper substantiates the need to improve the professional education and training component as a key factor in the formation of the renewable energy industry in Russia.
