Abstract

A toll road is a road that is intended as a freeway where should be free from traffic jams, so travel is faster and more comfortable than using ordinary roads. In its development, toll roads are now also experiencing congestion, especially when commuting to and from work. One of the causes of this congestion is the time-consuming payment system at toll road gate. This system uses an electronic card as a means of payment so that services at toll road gates can be accelerated. Currently, even though Indonesia has used automatic toll road gates, traffic jams still occur. This is because toll road users still have to stick a card into an electronic card reader to make a transaction, so vehicles still have to stop for a while. In addition, the proof of payment still uses of printed paper which is mostly only thrown away by toll road users and ends up becoming garbage around toll gates. In this paper, a Smart Toll Gate (STG) system will be designed with lower production cost which can identify toll road users' vehicles whether they are registered users and not registered. This designed system does not require the driver to stop because the transaction process will start when the car triggers the ultrasonic sensor at the toll road gate. The STG system is equipped with vehicle license plate image processing using OpenALPR. The image used in STG transactions based on vehicle class. This system also replaces proof of payment for toll road gate transactions, which are currently still in the form of paper, into digital messages via Telegram.
