Abstract

Cement manufacturing is one of the industries that consume a high amount of heat and electricity. Environmental issues such as global warming, increasing energy costs and concern for environment-friendly products have encouraged governments and companies to implement the application of energy management. At PT Semen Tonasa, the coal consumption reached 1,6 Million Tons per year to fulfill the energy needs of the cement plant and internal power plant. The energy costs incurred reached 30-40 percent of the company’s total costs. This paper is a case study of the implementation of the 50001: 2011 ISO-based Energy Management System at PT Semen Tonasa. The authors identified the potential challenges and benefits of implementing the ISO 50001 Energy Management System in a cement company. Final certification to the standard was awarded on May 23rd, 2019, rendering PT Semen Tonasa the first cement industry in Indonesia to be certified to the ISO 50001 standard. This paper acts as a guide for another cement manufacturers in Indonesia to adopt the ISO 50001 as Energy Management Standard.
