Abstract

This paper describes the design and implementation of a prototype package of tools for manipulating formal mathematics in a graphics and symbolic computation system. Our particular example is the manipulation of formal sums. We define a 'sum' datatype in a more general way than in current algebra systems such as Macsyma. We use integer intervals or other sets as the domain of summation. At each step of an interactive computation, the names of possibly appropriate rules are presented for further transformations. Further study is necessary to determine if this kind of prompting is generally useful.
