Abstract

The article researches the implementation of global development concepts into urban planning, that is, the translation of conceptual ideals into planning practice. The goal is to provide insight into the conceptual and operational challеnges of the implementation of global development concepts such as sustainability in urban development at the level of urban planning. The focus of the research is the ways of translating theoretical concepts into planning policies and urban documents, looking at the role of urban planning in sustainable urban development and developing the idea of sustainability in urban planning over time. Using the method of a systematic review of the literature and critical analysis, several aspects of the concept of sustainability of importance for urban planning are observed: (a) as public policy in the international and national context; (b) conceptual differentiation and relational connections along the lines of sustainability, sustainable development, sustainable urban development, urban planning; and (v) theoretical and planning aspects of implementing the concept of sustainability in urban planning. In the concluding remarks are recognized challenges and limitations of implementing the concept of sustainability in urban development due to the characteristics of the concept itself, the role and position of urban planning in that process, the current skope of the implementation of the concept and potential innovative theoretical approaches in eliminating observed anomalies in the current process.
