Abstract

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multisystem autoimmune disease with unknown aetiology which is characterised by general mucocutaneous, cardiovascular, renal, haematologic and neurologic manifestations. In most cases SLE patients receive immunosuppressants that may cause systemic implications. Increased risk of infection and delayed healing process should be taken into consideration during the dental treatment procedures. Because of the involvement of the salivary glands the composition and the amount of saliva released is usually altered in SLE patients.
