Abstract

Different materials were used as cylindrical housings (40 mm × 5 mm) for implantable electronic identification and monitoring tags in livestock. A total of 299 pigs received an implant in the right ear base. Wound healing was complete after 6 weeks in all animals, whereas tissue reaction at the site of the transponder started from the first week with highest levels between 6 and 9 weeks. About 10% of pigs showed visible swelling of the tissue surrounding the implant. Severeness of tissue reaction ante-mortem influenced the recovery rate of implants. Histological sections obtained from the pigs at slaughter show signs of an inflammatory response in most of the pigs which was associated with the implantation duration/body weight effect. Overall recovery of implants was 90%. The unfavourable inflammation and recovery results might be attributed to a sub-optimal injection procedure.
