Abstract

ABSTRACT SEPARATION by bouncing on a roller between clods and agricultural products depends on the difference in their rebound trajectories. Relation to the inclination of the impingement surface was investigated experimentally with potatoes using a plate instead of a roller. Interference that may hinder the separation when objects collide in the vicinity of the impingement surface was studied. A simulation model proved that steeper inclination of the impingement surface reduced the chance of collision between the objects and enables higher feed rate through the separator. To minimize interference and yet maintain a sufficient difference between the rebound distance of potatoes and clods for good separation, a compromise is needed. This is achieved at a very narrow range of impingement surface inclination that corresponds to experimental results obtained with the commercial separator.
