Abstract

Objectives In the last decade, several researchers have reported excellent results with a short implants (i.e. length ≤10 mm) and a two-stage technique. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that short implants in rehabilitation of atrophic jaws give similar long-term survival rates as longer implants used in larger bone volumes. Materials and methods From March 2003 to June 2004, 14 healthy patients (9 women and 5 men, aged between 45 and 68 years) were included in this study. A total of 42 titanium plasma-spray implants 4,5 × 6 mm were inserted in atrophic mandibles. Results This study included 42 implants placed in 14 patients. The overall implant survival rate was 95.25%. Conclusions Short implants are used in cases of reduced bone height since they avoid the need of additional surgical procedures for bone augmentation or mandibular nerve transposition. Short implant can be a solution in cases of limited bone height.
