Abstract

ABSTRACT Elastic stability of structures with finite degrees of freedom is analyzed. The two smallest critical values of the load parameter are supposed to be equal or nearly equal. The effect of imperfections on the distance between critical values is considered. Using the results of catastrophe theory, imperfections are determined at which the structure looses its stability before reaching a prescribed value of the load parameter.
