Abstract

The impacts of signal excited state absorption (ESA) on gain and noise figure (NF) in a Bismuth oxide-based erbium doped fiber amplifier was theoretically and experimentally investigated. The signal ESA reduces the gain bandwidth by ~7 nm compared with that of the theoretical calculation one that can be obtained without signal ESA. NF was also observed to be degraded at wavelengths of 1625~1640 nm.
