Abstract
The distribution of informal settlements in the south-eastern Cape coastal region and the types of impacts on the vegetation were assessed Natural vegetation adjacent to some of these settlements was sampled by means of the Braun-Blanquet and pointcentred quarter methods. Informal settlements in the south-eastern Cape coastal region exist at Port Alfred, Kenton-on-Sea, Jeffreys Bay, Plettenberg Bay and Knysna. Population numbers of these settlements vary from 180 to 4796 people. Five vegetation types are being impacted. The collection of firewood was found to be the most important impact. Other impacts include footpaths, the collecting of medicinal bark or muti, solid waste pollution and soil erosion. It was also found that the extent of impact is a function of distance away from settlements.
