Abstract

The cement industry provides the basic material in the production of concrete; but it is one of the most aggressive productions in relation to the environmental component, emitting large amounts of CO2 in the process. Research using new binders that meet the same characteristics as cement and its production less polluting is very important. In an analytical assessment work related to the technical feasibility of using natural volcanic pozzolan to replace an important part of Portland cement according to the elaboration of concrete offers. The potential that can present this material in its use may provide economic and environmental advantage to achieve lower cement consumption. The research has served to demonstrate the possibilities offered by Ecuador regarding the availability of natural pozzolan due to the volcanic origin of the Ecuadorian territory.
