Abstract

Load frequency control (LFC) is considered as one of the most important frequency-related ancillary services in a deregulated power system. In this present work, the effect of inclusion of superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) system along with thyristor controlled series compensator (TCSC) in a three-area deregulated power system for mitigating the various frequency-related issues in a deregulated power system is examined. For investigating the various LFC issues, optimal gain settings of the PI controllers in each area are obtained by genetic algorithm-based performance indices. The test system simulations under MATLAB/Simulink validate that inclusion of SMES–TCSC combination effectively damps out the frequency and tie-line power oscillations in an interconnected deregulated power system under three different types of contract scenarios.
