Abstract

Abstract This chapter looks ahead with respect to rice research for development and estimates the potential impact of rice research on income, poverty reduction and food security in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) over the years 2011-2020. Estimates are made within the context of the Global Rice Science Partnership, the CGIAR Research Programme on rice, led globally by the International Rice Research Institute and in Africa by AfricaRice. It is shown that the total cumulative discounted income benefit expected for all research and all SSA countries will be $0.9 billion in 2014 and $10.6 billion in 2020, corresponding to an annual income gain of $1.8 billion. As a consequence of these income gains, 2.3 million people will be lifted above the $1.25 PPP poverty line in 2014 and 11.0 million in 2020.
