Abstract

The authors investigate the impact of nonvanishing residual amplitude modulation on the improvement in length which is achievable with dispersion-mediated nonlinearity-enhanced transmission over simple dispersion-supported transmission. The results reveal the feasibility of an increase in length by a factor of 1.5 for a 10 Gbit/s standard-fibre transmission, even when conventional direct modulation is used, allowing more than 300 km to be bridged.
