Abstract

Objective To evaluate the impact of pupil diameter on naked vision maintenance after effective orthokeratology treatment. Methods A prospective study. A total of 56 eyes were selected from the myopia patients of Puyang Eye Hospital from January 2013 to February 2014. Orthokeratology was performed to correct the refractive errors of these children aged 8 to 15 years old, and uncorrected visual acuity at 6 o'clock in the afternoon was checked 3 months after lens wearing. All these 56 eyes were selected based on the following criteria: the spherical equivalent refraction was-5.00D, withthe-rule astigmatism <1.00D, the effective field was at the center of cornea, normal intraocular pressure, diopter without orthokeratology lens was between 0D to +0.5D. The average pupil diameter was calculated and was used as the criterion for dividing the children into two groups: pupil size below average (group A, 30 eyes) vs. pupil size above average (group B, 26 eyes). Data were analyzed by a paired t-test and independent sample t-test. Results The uncorrected visual acuity of both groups was significantly improved after wearing orthokeratology lens. The uncorrected visual acuity after wearing lens was respectively checked at 1 day, 1 week, 1 month and 3 months in the morning. There was no significant difference between two groups (t=1.826, P > 0.05; t=0.932, P >0.05; t=0.547, P >0.05; t=0.361, P >0.05). The uncorrected visual acuity at 6 o 'clock in the afternoon of subjects with below average pupil sizes and those with above average pupil sizes was 0.90±0.13 and 0.70±0.16, indicating a statistically significant difference (t=2.746, P < 0.05). Conclusions The uncorrected visual acuity in the morning after wearing orthokeratology lens has no significant difference between two groups. The uncorrected visual acuity maintained for a longer time in group A than that in group B. This may be due to the depth of field of small pupil diameter is larger than that of large pupil diameter.
