Abstract
40 Gbit/s single-wavelength alternate-polarisation soliton transmission over 500 km has been successfully demonstrated in a field trial using dispersion-shifted fibre. Comparisons with an equivalent laboratory trial and numerical simulations show that the main source of impairment is polarisation mode dispersion.
