Abstract

An open phase event occurred on the primary side of a Station Auxiliary Transformer; some electrical induction motors without adequate protection devices were not disconnected and were damaged by the thermal effect of a relatively high negative sequence current component. In order to develop recommendations for improving the voltage monitoring concept as well as for designing an appropriate protection concept a comprehensive transient analysis of the open phase fault in auxiliary power supply system is provided in this publication. The analysis includes different scenarios considering the single and double open phase faults, the transformer vector group and type of grounding of neutral point. Furthermore the influence of voltage unbalance on induction motor behaviour caused by an open phase fault condition is investigated in detail.
