Abstract

This study aims to understand the role of open innovation in the projects implemented in the city of Köln – Germany –, and to observe in which dimensions it has a superior impact. The initiatives developed in the city that result in innovative and sustainable solutions to improve the citizens' life quality are presented. We used a qualitative methodological approach, with the use of the single case study method of the aforementioned city. For data collection and analysis, the semi-structured interview was used as an instrument, and we proceeded to the documentary analysis of web pages, reports and news. The main conclusions are that open innovation influences the implementation of initiatives in different dimensions. The people, mobility and environment dimensions are those where this influence is higher and the government dimension presents a lower influence when compared with the remaining dimensions.
