Abstract

This study explores whether online claims for investor protection (informal systems) of a province have an effect on the capital structures of the companies located in this province, thereby expanding our knowledge of the effects of informal systems on investor protection. Results in this study imply that online claims for investor protection on the Internet as an informal system play the role of an alternative mechanism and produce a positive effect on real investor protection, which should garner the attention of both regulators and investors.
