Abstract

Summary The relationship of 18 occupational demands to nonwork experiences of 72 senior administrators of probation, parole, and aftercare services were examined. Demands included complexity, ambiguity, overload, role conflict, and responsibility for people. Dependent variables included negative feeling states, marital and life satisfaction, impact of job on home and family life, social support, social participation, and coping responses. Regression analyses indicated that several occupational demands were significantly related to negative nonwork experiences. But other occupational demands were significantly related to positive nonwork experiences. Models underlying occupational stress research, it is concluded, must become more complex to enhance understanding of stress phenomena.
