Abstract

In recent years significant advances have been made in understanding the effects of the marine environment on the propagation and scattering of sound and in acoustic signal processing. A few of these developments have been used in the study of marine life. Several examples of the uses of underwater acoustics to study life in the sea are examined. Specific topics include studies of plankton and small nekton; investigations and assessments of commercial fish stocks; and studies of marine mammals.
