Abstract

Penicillin allergy is frequently reported by hospitalized patients. However, at our institution, 56% of the patients we tested had a remote history of penicillin allergy (≥20 years since their reaction), 23% could not recall when their reaction occurred, and 30% were unable to identify the adverse reaction. In recent years, unconfirmed penicillin allergy has been associated with longer hospital stays, increased prevalence of Clostridium difficile, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus, increased health care costs, and increased risk of surgical site infections.
