Climate change is a highly complex social-ecological problem characterized by system-type dynamics that are important to communicate in a variety of settings, ranging from formal education to decision makers to informal education of the general public
Sustainable stewardship of social-ecological systems affected by climate change will require communication and problem solving that accounts for the dynamics of the system (Senge 1990, Richmond 1993, Maani 2013)
Summary
Climate change is a highly complex environmental problem characterized by system-type dynamics. The definition provided by Moore et al (2010: 5) suggests that systems thinking is “The ability to recognize, understand, and synthesize the interactions, and interdependencies in a set of components designed for a specific purpose.”. For this analysis, we use this working definition, albeit removing the reference to “design”: Systems thinking is the ability to recognize, understand, and synthesize the interactions, and interdependencies in a set of elements that form a coherent whole The definition provided by Moore et al (2010: 5) suggests that systems thinking is “The ability to recognize, understand, and synthesize the interactions, and interdependencies in a set of components designed for a specific purpose.” For this analysis, we use this working definition, albeit removing the reference to “design”: Systems thinking is the ability to recognize, understand, and synthesize the interactions, and interdependencies in a set of elements that form a coherent whole
