Abstract
This paper presents a novel and comprehensive numerical method to study the impact of the atmospheric marine environment on cementitious materials. The transportations of moisture, aqueous and gaseous substances are modelled by a multi-species transportation model. A hybrid thermodynamic modelling method is developed to consider the chemical interactions, including carbonation, chloride binding, and other simultaneous chemical reactions. The proposed method is implemented to model the reported experiments, and the detailed degradation mechanisms are revealed. Furthermore, the significances of modelling the carbonation-induced water release and the mutual influences between carbonation and chloride aerosol attack are demonstrated.
