Abstract

Purpose: Up to 65% of children with congenital heart disease (CHD) suffer from malnutrition. The goal of our study was to evaluate how health and nutrition outcomes changed in newborns undergoing surgery for CHD at our institution after implementation of our “Pediatric Heart Institute Nutrition Program,” which included pre-operative and post-operative feeding algorithms to standardize nutritional management. Methods: This was a single-center cohort study in 3 phases that included newborns with single-ventricle physiology, two-ventricle physiology, and two-ventricle physiology with shunt-dependent pulmonary blood flow who underwent cardiac surgery between September 2008 and July 2015.
