Abstract

Issue: C difficile is an anaerobic, spore-forming bacillus that is responsible for a spectrum of C difficile, associated disease (CDAD), including uncomplicated diarrhea, pseudomembranous colitis, and toxic megacolon, which can, in some instances, lead to sepsis and even death. A pilot study in our ICU found that the majority of specimens sent for C difficile testing were negative, however, repeated testing and empiric treatment led to excess lengths of stay, increased cost of care and over-treatment.
